More Than Just a Device
It may be May, but I’m still talking about my Christmas gift—because it changed everything. I received the gift of hearing through hearing aids, and it’s transformed my daily life.
Experiencing Sound Like Never Before
From the jingle of the cat’s bell to faint background noises, I felt like I had suddenly acquired a superpower. But with every gift comes adjustment. Just like new glasses take time to get used to, hearing aids do too—and the journey isn’t always comfortable.
Why Hearing Aids Can Be Difficult to Embrace
Tiny, fiddly, and often frustrating, hearing aids demand both dexterity and patience. Now, I better understand why many older adults resist them. They amplify every sound—even the ones we’ve long learned to tune out.
Shame, Stigma, and the Power of Acceptance
Unlike glasses, which are often seen as stylish, hearing aids still carry outdated perceptions of decline. I had to confront and overcome that shame. Accepting hearing loss was difficult—but necessary.
The Moment Everything Shifted
After the hearing test, I told the assistant, “You’re speaking more clearly now.” But I realised—she wasn’t. I was just finally hearing properly. The issue hadn’t been others. It had been me. That realisation was humbling—and freeing.
Looking Inward: When the Problem Is Within
It’s easier to blame others—the kids mumble, the TV’s too quiet, the radio’s faulty. But true growth comes from recognising when the fault lies within. Once I stopped blaming, I could start hearing.
Perseverance and Transformation
Yes, hearing aids take effort. But I’m still using them. The radio is turned down. Conversations are clearer. I’m embracing the change—and it’s worth it.
What’s Your Superpower?
Acknowledging what’s going on inside us is powerful. Blame won’t change your situation—but awareness can. I help people move through the discomfort of self-realisation and into a place of empowerment.
Let’s uncover your superpower.
